I am developing a concept for an experiential website based on Charles Darwin and his epic journey aboard the H.M.S Beagle. This online interactive journey highlights key moments from his epic expedition, showing text fragments from Darwin’s diary.
Illustrated like a graphic novel to appeal to students not familiar with his work, the viewer can scroll the Beagle ship along the horizontal time device, travelling through the five years journey following the young Darwin in his exciting adventures . The site has extra features like a multiple answer quiz to test students, animated info-graphics and external links to further content.

One of the most difficult things to do is to be your own client, you never quite hit the target, or so it seems at times…but in rethinking the design and multi-purposes of my site I am happy to say that the resulting flexibilty, ease of use, and possibility to expand its varied content in a structured way feels like an important step in the right direction.

So here it is, in its modular glory, for which I am very grateful to the extremely helpful Ap at Alsjeblaft, from now on it’s all about visualising..;)

TU Delft: Image Motion Experience, and popcorn….

These are some photos and screenshots from the animations made at TU in Delft where I gave a masterclass in storyboarding, drawing and 2d animation. The brief was simple: take a movie, analyze a scene, and re-script it in the form of a storyboard, to be then animated. The students had a short amount of time to get to grips with the inner workings of software such as Flash and After Effects, but they all jumped in at the deep end and I have to say with amazing results, movies like ” the da vinci code’, ‘One flew over the cuckoo’s nest’, ‘Rear window’, ‘Blade Runner’, ‘Citizen Kane’, and ‘From dusk ’till dawn’ got a radical makeover, in the process we killed loads of Bhudda’s…

Lamien

For the Dutch children clothing company Lamien, I have designed and animated characters to represent their online identity.
The concept revolves around a magical world inhabited by little winged girls and their everyday activities. They live cosily inside a golden egg perched on a tree branch on the outskirts of a big city. The egg, the company’s logo, is where their makers, also represented as winged characters, are busy tailoring their clothes in a flur of activities…

Expeditie Beagle

For the University of Utrecht I have designed a site centered around the perception of Darwin and its theories, using information design and animated info-graphics to engage the students. Having from the UU a great deal of freedom in shaping the visual and interactive online experience has given me the opportunity to work across media and explore some of the exciting possibilities of delivering rich online content.

Kunsthal Doeboek

A ‘Doeboek’ is the equivalent of an activity book. Children can read it and get inspired to follow some of the ideas in it, hopefully adding to their play experience. That is why the Kunsthal in Rotterdam published this book to coincide with their summer exhibitions and to encourage children to explore the museum and get to know the art works a little better.

Summer themes

Project coordinated by Countercreatives.nl for Effectory, a company based in Amsterdam specialised in market research. I have designed a series of 12 images centered around summer themes, and made storyboards to show how to animate the transitions from one image to the other, to make the filling of online forms a little less dull….

What are the scenarios for the future? This was the premise for an online Flash presentation describing different scenarios and trends in our society for the coming 25 years…I have designed the presentation and navigation, animating text and images.
